Every year around March and April, many law firms start announcing promotions and role changes.

For some, it’s a time to celebrate. For others, it’s a moment to pause and reflect.

Let’s face it—evaluating people is tough for any organization, and it’s even harder for the individuals being evaluated.

One thing we don’t often talk about is this:
Most lawyers (and professionals in consulting, accounting, etc.) aren’t trained in human resources.
We know how to assess legal work or execution—but we’re not always equipped to evaluate people’s growth, leadership skills, or emotional intelligence in a fair and structured way.

This gap in the evaluation process is something we need to acknowledge.

To all the lawyers going through this period:

If you’ve been promoted—congratulations!

If not—don’t be too hard on yourself or feel the need to prove your worth to others. Instead, try this:

1. Reflect, don’t React

Take a moment to breathe and process your thoughts. Write down what you expected and what didn’t happen. Sometimes, clarity comes from quiet reflection.

2. Ask for Honest Feedback

Speak to someone you trust—a senior or peer. Don’t look for comfort, but for clarity. Ask them: “What could I have done better?”

3. Make a Plan, not a Grudge

Treat this as a learning opportunity. Set three clear goals—one for your professional growth, one personal, and one technical. When your mind stays open, growth is always possible.

In Conclusion

Your title doesn’t define your talent. Your position doesn’t decide your future.

What really matters is how you respond when things don’t go your way.
Stay grounded, stay hungry—and remember, sometimes not being promoted gives you space to grow in ways you didn’t expect.

Let this season be not just about getting ahead, but also about growing deeper.
